Optimal safety, even in explosive (ATEX) environments

Auer Signal, also for ATEX environments

Auer Signal, founded in 1910 in Vienna, Austria, has been a market leader in signalling for many years. Whether optical or acoustic, when it comes to signalling technology, Auer Signal has the right product or products.

Over 100 years of experience is reflected in all Auer products. They are the experts in signalling, even in (potentially) explosive environments where the equipment used, including signalling, must meet the highest safety standards.

With Auer Signal products, you can improve your production process as your employees are immediately informed about, for example, a machine malfunction. But also when it comes to the safety of people on the shop floor, clear signalling of emergencies or even (acute) danger through light and/or sound is vital, especially in explosive environments. Naturally, Auer also has the right products for these types of environments.

ATEX (ATmosphères EXplosibles)

Explosion Hazard - ATEX EnvironmentsFor many environments, standard signal towers, signal lamps, or buzzers/beepers are sufficient. However, in explosive hazardous areas, also known as ATEX areas or Ex areas, a standard signal lamp or acoustic module is not permitted. Special signal lamps and acoustic modules are needed for such areas, which can be found in shipbuilding, the chemical industry, gas companies, paint spraying booths, refineries, etc.

Auer Signal has special ATEX signal lamps and signal horns to maximize the safety of your employees in explosive hazardous areas.

What is an explosive, ATEX or Ex area?

The terms "explosive area", "ATEX zone" or "Ex zone" are quite broad. What makes a space an explosive area and how dangerous is such a space in terms of explosion risk? To clarify this, explosive areas are classified into different ATEX or Ex zones, depending on the level of explosion risk.

The different ATEX / Ex zones

Overview of explosive zones

Firstly, a distinction is made between explosion hazards caused by gas (often indicated with a "G" from the word gas) or by dust (often indicated with a "D" from the word dust).

Then, the degree of explosion risk is considered to further subdivide the spaces into, for each type (gas and dust), 3 different zones. Here, zone 2 and 22 represent an area where explosion risk is present for less than 0.1% of the time. In zones 1 and 21, the explosion risk is greater, with explosion hazards present between 0.1% and 10% of the time. Finally, there are zone 0 and zone 20. In zones with these designations, there is often, more than 10% of the time, an explosion hazard present.
